Filling the Market Gap: The Case for a Native 1G Tunable SFP
One of the first lessons in any MBA curriculum is that the best product is the one that fills a genuine market gap. At Pivotal Optics, that is the exact approach we took with our Native 1G Tunable SFP offering.
For years, 1G DWDM operators have managed a difficult balancing act between two operational models. On one hand, you have the logistics of managing 40+ fixed-wavelength SKUs. On the other, you have the industry practice of utilizing 10G tunable hardware and "down-clocking" it to 1G speeds. While 10G-to-1G applications are a proven and widely used architecture, they aren't always the most economically optimized choice for the 1G edge.
Optimized for the 1G Edge
Instead of relying on multi-purpose hardware, our Native 1G offering utilizes a hardware design specifically for high performance Gigabit Ethernet.
- Full Spectral Coverage: This 1G tunable solution is a two-part offering that covers a broad range of 40 channels across the C-Band, specifically ITU channels 21 through 60.
- Wavelength Reliability: Our design ensures wavelength control is maintained within ±0.1nm over the entire operating life and temperature range of the module.
- DWDM Compliance: This stability falls strictly within DWDM requirements, ensuring consistent performance within standard commercial operating temperatures ranging from 0°C to +70°C.
- 30dB Link Budget: Engineered as an EZX solution, these modules provide a conservative link budget of approximately 30dB to maintain 120km reach over single-mode fiber (SMF) without the need for mid-span amplification.
- Transmit and Receive Performance: To achieve this budget, the transmitter provides a minimum output of +2 dBm coupled with a high-sensitivity APD photodiode receiver rated at -28 dBm.
- Lean Power Profile: The module maintains a total power dissipation of <2.0W, offering a leaner thermal profile for high-density access platforms.
- Pivotal Tip: When evaluating suppliers, power draw can be a key indicator of what’s inside the module. If a datasheet lists a consumption greater than 2W, it’s likely a 10G tunable coded for 1G use. Our native 1G SFPs, by contrast, consume less than 2W, ensuring you are getting hardware truly optimized for Gigabit Ethernet rather than paying a "10G premium."
- Standard Compliance: These optics are fully compliant with the DWDM SFP MSA and SFF-8472, ensuring seamless digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM).
The Bottom Line
We believe in giving engineers the right tool for the job. The transition from fixed-wavelength SFPs to tunables should be an easy decision based on inventory simplification. You shouldn't have to carry 40 different "spares" on your truck, but you also shouldn't have to pay a "10G premium" just because the rest of the industry stopped innovating at the 1G layer.
Simply put: If you are using 1G DWDM in your network, this product is worth evaluating. Our investment in Native 1G Tunable technology eliminates the 10G Tax so you can focus on scaling your network efficiently without over-specifying hardware.
